An evolutionary overview of Penstemon, from Pleistocene to present

Penstemon is the largest genus endemic to North America with ca. 280 species. It is a relatively young genus, having originated between 3.4 to 3.7 million years ago. The majority of diversification for the genus has occurred since the early Pleistocene, starting about 1.7 million years ago. Most of the diversification correlates to a pattern of dispersal and founder events corresponding to interglacial periods. In this presentation, evolutionary pattern and process for this beautiful and diverse genus will be discussed, using the latest phylogeny for 243 species.
